Reducing chemical N fertiliser usage - Jack Nolan - Virtual Dairy Conference
Can you reduce Nitrogen fertiliser use in 2021 by a half bag of Urea or 1 bag of CAN? This is the challenge being put to farmers by Jack Nolan, Senior Inspector Department of Agriculture Food & the Marine (DAFM) Water Quality and Biodiversity department.
The European Green Deal is a set of policy initiatives by the European Commission which aims to make Europe climate neutral by 2050. The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal and it aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly.
As a result of these, Irish farmers are going to face major challenges as well as opportunities in how they farm over the next 10 years. Biodiversity inclusion on farms will play a big part. Steps must also be taken to reduce nutrient loss from agriculture to water by 50%. We can expect to see less fertiliser being used on farms. There are changes being implemented as part of the Nitrates Derogation Review for farmers stocked at up to 250kgs of organic Nitrogen/hectare.
Jack Nolan discusses the ways in which Nitrogen fertiliser use can be reduced on farm here in this video.
