Talking about sustainable farm management: improving communication – have your say!

Lisa Marijke van der Berg is carrying out an online survey to analyse communication with dairy farmers about sustainable land management practices, as part of a M.Sc. Research project with Teagasc and Wageningen University (WUR). Take the online survey here

Farm management decisions are based on many different factors. Ease of implementation, aspirations, knowledge gaps, lock-ins can all influence the choice between practices. In addition, some management practices might be recommended by someone close to the farmer, while other practices are advised against in the farmer’s social network. To get insight into these decision-making processes Lisa Marijke van den Berg, intern at Teagasc and student at Wageningen University, is surveying dairy farmers in order to tailor future communication with farmers to meet their needs. Sustainable land management practices can reduce the environmental impact of dairy farming. Nevertheless, sustainable farm management practices are not always implemented on farms. Therefore, more insight is needed into the decision-making processes related to these sustainable land management practices and the barriers preventing farmers from implementation. By getting this deeper insight into decision making processes, communication with farmers and facilities for farmers can be adjusted in the future to better meet farmer needs.

Online survey to analyse communication with dairy farmers about sustainable land management practices.

To better understand how future communication with farmers can be improved, current decision-making processes must be investigated. To facilitate this, a survey has been set up by Lisa Marijke van den Berg  (WUR) to analyse communication patterns and attitudes in relation to sustainable farm management practices. The survey results will be used to aid guidelines for advisory and the collective results will be shared afterwards.

About the Researcher:

Growing up in a rural farming area in the north of the Netherlands, Lisa Marijke got interested in sustainable and healthy food systems. At Wageningen University, she developed a research interest in agriculture from a social perspective. Therefore, she started a double master in Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems and Communication, Health and Life Sciences. As a social science student focussing on agriculture, she believes that farmers should be involved in decision making and policy processes that impact their day to day lives.
