Watch: Signpost Series: Managing Health and Safety in the busy spring season


On this episode of the Signpost Series, Mark Gibson, Head of Teagasc Outreach & Innovation Department was joined by Dr. John McNamara & Francis Bligh, Health and Safety Specialists, Teagasc to discuss managing health and safety in the busy spring season.

John and Francis discussed the challenges and high fatality rates in the agriculture sector. Despite efforts, agriculture continues to report high incidents of both fatal and non-fatal accidents. The webinar highlighted the risk factors contributing to accidents on farms, including machinery, livestock, and falls. They stressed the necessity of prioritising health and safety in daily farm operations.

Practical advice for farmers included the management of workload, ensuring adequate sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and regular exercise to manage stress and improve well-being. The importance of using proper safety equipment and undergoing training for activities such as chainsaw and quad bike operation was highlighted.

The discussion also touched on the mental health aspect, acknowledging that stress and isolation can affect farmers. Strategies to combat these issues include seeking professional help, community support, and engaging in physical activities.

A questions and answers session took place at the end of the webinar which was facilitated by Pat Murphy, Head of Environment KT, Teagasc.
