Forestry online workshops 2021

Teagasc will run a series of online workshops on forest establishment during February and March 2021 entitled “A New Forest – Getting Started”. This will provide a great opportunity to interact with your local forestry advisor to learn about starting a new forest, by registering for three informal workshops to build your knowledge. Registration is required – see www.teagasc.ie/forestryworkshops

The Teagasc Forestry Development Department is organising these local online workshops to enable landowners to gain an understanding of what a new forest can offer, learn what’s involved and how to get started in the planting process.

During February and March, landowners can log into three one-hour online workshops. Teagasc would encourage you to attend all three sessions as different topics will be covered on each session.

Why should you attend?

There are many benefits from planting and managing some woodland. Landowners often plant some land for a variety of different reasons.  The soil, environment and location for example may influence the species selection or forest type. There are different forestry schemes available under the current Forestry Programme which may fulfil different purposes when it comes to forestry establishment. It is essential that an owner knows and understand their own objective of what they want from their forest or woodland.  These online workshops will highlight the many benefits from forestry and also provide an overview of each forestry scheme that is currently available.

Dates and details

See table for details of dates for these local events. It is recommended that you attend your ‘local’ event, as discussions will be more relevant to the location of your forest site. Each session will be held through Zoom.

Session 1 – Benefits of forestry

In this session, landowners can hear about the potential benefits for forests and set their own objectives when considering their potential forest site and future plans.

Session 2 – Working through a case study

In this session, the presenter will bring the attendees through the process of deciding what forest type might suit a particular site specific to the geographical area, through a practical exercise.

Session 3 – How to get started

The practical steps involved in getting organised to plant is the subject of the third session, including: grant eligibility; grant structures and rates; interaction with other schemes.

Registration and attending each session

It is important that all who are interested register in time in order that they can receive a link to their local online workshop. Please register at the following link www.teagasc.ie/forestryworkshops.

Following registration, you will be sent a link to access the workshop sessions. This link will be sent a few days prior to the first session. This will allow you to attend each session, which will consist of a presentation by the local forestry development officer and will also allow you take part in an informal discussion.

The online workshops have received a lot of interest already. These online workshops are open to all interested in establishing a new forest.  If interested, please register today!
