Talking Timber 2024 - Know Your Forest
Teagasc's Forestry Development Department, in association with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, will hold its annual conifer timber marketing event, "Talking Timber" on March 14th in the Great National Ballykisteen Golf Hotel, Limerick Junction, Co. Tipperary.
This year the focus is on knowing the value of your forest.
With many private forests on the pathway to producing high quality logs, forest owners need to know the value of their timber. The quality and size of the timber will have a significant bearing on the market price offered. A proper inventory is crucial when preparing your trees for the sale. Forest owners need to know the quantity and categories of products in their forests.
Management plans and forest inventory can inform good decisions, leading to the supply of what the markets and society require and importantly maximising returns. Forestry can be a tax-efficient land use. An awareness of the financial and taxation issues around the sale of timber is vital, particularly in older forests.
Talking Timber will run from 9.30 am to 2:30 pm. There will be an outdoor demonstration organized by Forestry Industries Ireland (FII), where attendees can view and discuss the quality of timber required by Irish sawmills. Timber categories and products like sawlog, palletwood, pulpwood, fencing stakes, biomass etc. will be on show.
The demonstration will be followed by a conference with presentations from Teagasc, industry professionals, a tax expert, and a forest owner on their perspective, advice, and experience of what is involved in harvesting conifers successfully.
This event is free, but all attendees must register to secure a place. Register here for the Talking Timber event.
