Teagasc Forestry Research Update - The Potential Utilisation of Alder
Dr Ian Short, Broadleaf researcher with Teagasc has partnered with GMIT Letterfrack in researching the properties of alder thinnings. Approximately 95% of hardwoods used in the Irish furniture and woodworking industries is imported.
There are 18,000 ha of alder in Ireland, 14,000 ha is younger than 30 years old, and to date alder thinnings tend to enter the firewood market. This video provides the second update on research being carried out by Colin Marren, MSc Walsh Scholar, at GMIT Letterfrack to investigate the properties, and additional potential uses, of alder thinnings. A previous video illustrated the assessment of planed and sanded planked material. This video illustrates the testing, following international standards, of CNC routing and boring of the material.
