Tim Reddin's Experience

Tim Reddin is a forest owner from Co Waterford. He explains in this video what he has learned from thinning his forest three times and what to watch out for when selling timber. This video was made for Virtual Talking Timber 2021.

Planted in 2007, there is a good mix of hardwood and softwood in the Reddin’s plantation. They have progressed from knowing very little about forestry to coming through 3 thinnings and learning as they went along. Tim says their first thinning experience was a lesson in how not to go about it. However he says he and his wife learned a lot from being part of a forest knowledge transfer discussion group since. He advises other forest owners to get all of the facts, talk to forestry companies and get multiple quotes before thinning. He found out about Irish Wood Producers while on a Teagasc farm walk. He recommends talking to your Teagasc Forestry Advisor and knowing your market for your timber.
