John Galvin farms near Dunmanway, Co. Cork with his wife Yvonne, and they milk just over 100 cows on 35ha.
A high rainfall area and nestled between mountain and bog John puts a big focus and effort on getting cows out early in February. In 2020 John’s Jersey-cross herd produced 520 Kg MS/cow (supplied to Dairygold Coop) on 750 kg meal. John is making a very conscious effort to reduce his environmental footprint.
He is part of the Caha River Project and his farm is in GLAS for which all slurry is spread with LESS and most of the fertiliser applied is in the form of protected urea.
In 2020, John’s farm grew 14.7 T DM/Ha.
