Could you be the Equine Specialist Teagasc is looking for?


Teagasc has a vacancy for an Equine Specialist (Permanent) at Teagasc Grange, Dunsany, Co. Meath. Candidates must have a QQI Level 8 degree in Equine Science or BAgrSc in Animal Science, specialising in equine, or equivalent. Read more for details of post and salary. Closing date 10 January 2022

Job Summary

Interview Requirements

Applicants should be aware that it is proposed to hold interviews during week commencing 17th January 2022.

As part of the interview process applicants will be expected to deliver a 10 minute presentation with the title of "What are the main needs of the equine sector and how will you, as an Equine Specialist, address these needs?

Basic Function

To deliver as part of a team, leadership, training and support for the equine programme within Teagasc and to the wider equine industry that assists in developing sustainable equine businesses and that delivers on the goals of national strategies such as "Reaching New Heights". 

Background

The post will be based in Teagasc Grange, however other major Teagasc locations may be considered solely at the discretion of Teagasc management. The successful candidate will form part of the Equine Specialist Team which is part of the wider Rural Development  Department.

Job Objectives

  • To take a leadership role in delivering on the objectives relevant to Teagasc in the equine strategy, Reaching New Heights, and any future national equine strategy.
  • To maintain and enhance relationships with equine demonstration farmers, breeders and producers
  • To deliver national projects in equine such as the Signpost Farm Programme and also including possible European Innovation Programme projects.

Skills Required

Essential Qualifications:

Candidates must have a QQI Level 8 degree in Equine Science or BAgrSc in Animal Science specialising in equine or an equivalent degree / higher level qualification, with a formal equine specialism

Desireable Qualifications:

  • A postgraduate qualification
  • Equine research experience
  • A BHS coaching accreditation (stage 3) or HSI Level 2 coaching accreditation or equivalent
  • Experience in equine or other advisory discussion group facilitation
