Exploring Tomorrow: Teagasc's dazzling showcase at BT Young Scientist 2024

The Teagasc stand at the BT Young Scientist 2024 is a dynamic hub of innovation, with an array of captivating displays that leave attendees in awe. Eimear Ferguson, Education and Public Engagement Officer at Teagasc, highlights some of these from the first day of this year’s exhibit.

Raquel Caetano Ferreira, Xinyue Dai, Elena Hayes and Szymon Urbas, researchers from VistaMilk, are bringing a touch of the future to the BT Young Scientist this year with their captivating exploration of digital technology in farming and psychology. Attendees were treated to an immersive VR experience that delved into the interplay between virtual environments, artificial intelligence and human psychology.

At the Earth observation and mapping stand, Jesko Zimmermann, Teagasc Ashtown, showcased the power of technology in understanding and monitoring our planet. Through stunning visuals and real-life examples, attendees are gaining insight into the role of drones and satellites in environmental research. The exhibit highlights the potential of such technology in advancing earth observation and its applications in various scientific domains.

John Casey and Noel Kennedy’s forestry demonstration takes participants on a journey through sustainable forestry practices. From tree planting techniques to modern harvesting methods, attendees gained hands-on experience in responsible resource management and best practices. The stand emphasises the importance of sustainable forestry for environmental conservation and whole farm planning.

Donal Gernon, Teagasc Mushroom Advisory, pictured above, is showing students and teachers how mushrooms are grown in Ireland. His display focuses on the raw materials and the growing climate required to grow mushrooms.

Graham Fallon and John Mulhern, Education, Botanic Gardens, are displaying ingeniously blended education with botany, offering interactive displays that bring plant science to life. Attendees are discovering innovative ways to integrate botanic knowledge into their lives and sparking their interest in the natural world around them.
