Teagasc Pig Research Facility Update - 29 October
Video in a series by the Teagasc Pig Development Department. Tomás Ryan, farm manager at Moorepark Pig Research Facility talks about the production figures being achieved on the unit at present.
Last weeks weaning saw 13.3 piglets weaned per sow weighing 8.1 kg per piglet on average. Weaned pigs spend 7 weeks in the weaner accommodation and are moved at 11 weeks of age to the finishing unit at approximately 35kg. Pigs spend 11 to 12 weeks in the finishing stage, year to date carcass weight is at 88kg mainly due to trials ongoing in the unit which require specific slaughter times. It’s projected 5,700 pigs will be sold this year from the 200 sow unit, approximately 28.5 pigs per sow per year.
