The Pig Exceptional Payment Scheme 2 (PEPS2) was recently announced by Minister McConalogue. PEPS2 is a one-off payment scheme for pig farmers administered by the Department of Agriculture. The aim is to support farmers in the current financial crisis in order to contribute to food security and address market imbalances. The scheme is a follow-on from the original PEPS scheme and is open to all commercial pig farms subject to them fulfilling certain eligibility and conditionality requirements.

Damien Ward, Assistant Principal Meat Policy Division in the Department of Agriculture, joins Ciarán Carroll on the latest episode of The Pig Edge Podcast to explain the Scheme. In the first article of this newsletter Emer McCrum explains how to apply for the PEPPS2 scheme.

Also in this newsletter, Gerard McCutcheon discusses solar energy and whether it’s something you should think about, Orla Kinane discusses providing environmental enrichment for pigs, we welcome a new Post-Doc researcher to the PDD, and congratulate a past PDD student who was recently awarded the UFAW Early Career Animal Welfare Researcher of the year.
