Market challenges for the sheep sector
Bord Bia Sheep Sector Manager, Seamus McMenamin joins Ciaran Lynch, Teagasc Sheep Specialist, on the latest OviCast podcast to give a market update.
Seamus discusses current levels of throughput and some of the challenges being seen with light carcasses at present. He also touches on the international trade, in particular the increased volumes of Australian lamb and what impact that has had on Irish export markets. Seamus also provides an update on plant approval to get lamb exported onto the US market.
With store lamb sales also ramping up, Seamus and Ciaran also discuss the potential impact of an earlier Easter and Ramadan on the hogget trade next spring. Domestic promotional activity, which is being undertaken to improve consumption to a younger demographic, was also discussed.
