Calving heifers at 24 months - Mayo
28 October 2022 28 October 2022Venue Farm of Michael & Niall Biggins, Ballynalty, Headford, Co. Mayo. Eircode: H91 HTK6
Calving heifers at two years of age significantly increases the net margin per suckler cow compared to calving at 30 to 36 months of age. Reducing the age at which heifers calve is also one of the most efficient ways to reduce carbon emissions from a suckler herd. To learn more about the benefits of calving at two years of age and to get a better understanding of how it can be implemented on a suckler farm, Teagasc and ICBF are running a series of workshops across the country in October and November. The numbers being invited to these informative and interactive workshops is limited and pre-booking is essential.
The topics that will be covered at the workshops include:-
- Why calve at 2 years of age
- Busting the myths around earlier calving
- Target weight gains and how they can be achieved
- Heifer health management
- Affordable synchronisation options for heifers
- Selecting the right sires for use on heifers
These workshops are free to attend and participants can either attend a morning or an afternoon session (please check the times for the workshop nearest your location).
All participants in the workshops will also receive a free Teagasc e-learning module on calving heifers at two years of age. This short 15 minute module can be completed online on a PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet.
