Plastic recycling and investigations into packaging and shelf life of horticultural produce - Webinar7 October 2021 7 October 2021
The drive to reduce plastic use and waste is widespread in society. The horticulture industry also seeks to reduce plastic use, increase recycling and at the same time maintain produce and plant quality. Teagasc are delighted to host a webinar with two presenters who are very familiar with the challenges the horticulture sectors face.
Francis Peters - Recycling plastic in the nursery stock and horticulture industry, a recyclers perspective.
Francis is manager of KDI Recycling who work alongside ROC Recycling Solutions Limited. He has seen a significant increase in demand for their services over the last year. He has worked with many of the biggest nurseries in Ireland to address the difficulties they have faced in dealing with plastic and card board waste. He will look at case studies and suggest how to best manage waste and prepare it for recycling.
Jesus Maria Frias Celayeta - Investigations into packaging and shelf life of horticultural produce
Prof Jesus Frias Celayeta is the Academic Leader for the Environmental Sustainability and Health Institute in Technical University Dublin. Jesus has a wide area of expertise including post harvest technology. TU Dublin and Teagasc have recently collaborated on a research project “leaf no Waste” that investigated the potential increased shelf life for some salad leaves by enriching the plants with a bio stimulant containing silicic acid. As part of this pilot research, different packaging films were tested with Dr. Shivani Pathania (Teagasc, Food Industry Development Department) and Life Cycle Assessment of production, processing and packaging is being led Dr. Lael Walsh (Teagasc Horticulture Development Department).
The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session.
