Irvine Allen's Teagasc Green Acres Farm Walk

Event Time 2pm
Venue Farm of Irvine Allen, Mount Temple, Moate, Co. Westmeath.

Join us on Tuesday, 5 October at 2pm on the farm of Irvine Allen, Mount Temple, Moate, Co. Westmeath for a Teagasc Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme farm walk .

Irvine is one of the participants in the second phase of the Teagasc Green Acres Calf to Beef Programme and is running a dairy calf-to-beef operation on his 58ha farm in Co. Westmeath.

Irvine purchased his first batch of dairy calves in 2012. Previous to this he had 10-12 suckler cows and was buying in 35 weanlings each year and bringing all to slaughter. Since then he has sold out his suckler cows in order to expand his calf to beef enterprise.

Irvine purchased 110 calves in the spring of 2020 and 2021 directly off dairy farms. All of these calves are dairy-bred males, which will be carried to steer beef at 21, 24 and 28 months, targeting a liveweight output of 1,100kg/ha.

Grassland management plays an important role on the farm, with the farm being well divided up under a paddock grazing system, while work is ongoing to improve soil fertility.

The event will focus on the first year of the animal’s life on the farm, the second grazing season and finishing options for dairy-beef steers.

Registration is required prior to attendance due to Covid 19 guidelines and this can be done by ringing Teagasc Tullamore on 0579321405
