Let's Talk Pigs - Becoming Lean – A Guide for Pig Farmers

The first in a series of fortnightly webinars aimed at Irish pig producers will focus on becoming Lean and will feature special guest Richard Keegan.

Richard Keegan has spent many years using and learning about what are now called Lean tools and techniques. He worked in industry, including a time with Nestle where he was first exposed to good farming practice in the foothills of the Berner Alpes in Switzerland. He worked for nearly thirty years with Enterprise Ireland where he was responsible for creating, developing and deploying the Lean Business offer to clients. He had the opportunity to talk about his ideas for Lean and Farming when he was engaging with the dairy companies, notably DairyGold, Glanbia and Aurivo. In more recent years Richard has had key involvement in supporting the DAFM funded Lean Pig Project from the earliest stages and throughout, sharing his experience and expertise while supporting the Teagasc technical team. Richard is also currently developing a “Lean for Pig Farming” booklet with the Teagasc Pig Development Department team.

He is an adjunct associate professor with Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin where he lectures at both MBA, undergraduate and executive education levels on operations.

For the past 20 years he has supported the EU Japan Centre for Industrial Co-operations World Class Manufacturing and Lean in Europe Missions. He is asked to support a number of Global companies by telling them what he sees in their operations. He has been to the Toyota Deeside Engine plant 86 times and supports Toyota in the development of the Toyota Lean Management Centre, Toyota’s teaching facility in Europe.
