National Farm Safety Conference
This year's National Farm Safety Conference will be held at the Clanard Court Hotel, Athy, Co Kildare on Wednesday 18th August.
Registration takes place from 9.00 – 9.30 am and the conference finishes at 1pm. Attendance is free of charge but booking is required at Teagasc, Naas (045 -879203).
The conference is being held against an upsurge of work related deaths on farms with 18 occurring so far this year.
Mr. Dara Calleary T.D. Minister for Labour Affairs and Public Service Reform will give the opening address. The Minister has called for fresh thinking from all organisations with a role in farm health and safety to cut the toll of tragedy, pain suffering and loss associated with fatalities, injuries and ill health.
Mr. Martin O'Halloran, Health and Safety Authority Chief Executive, will introduce the Minister and give the H.S.A.’s view on the way forward.
IFA President Mr. John Bryan will chair the conference with Macra na Feirme and ICMSA Presidents Michael Gowing and Jackie Cahill joining him to participate in an open discussion forum at the end of the conference.
Professor Gerry Boyle, Director of Teagasc will speak on the role of research and knowledge transfer in addressing farm health and safety. Postgraduate Teagasc researchers Aoife Osborne and Maria Feeney will provide recent findings on their studies on the ‘Occupational Health of Farmers’ and ‘Suicides and Agricultural Change’.
Dr Noel Richardson, Director of the Centre for Men’s Health at Carlow IT and principal author of the National Men’s Health Policy will outline the practical relevance of that policy for farmers.
Medical Doctor and Specialist Registrar in Plastic Surgery, Dr Anne Collins will describe her study on the horrific consequences of power shaft injuries.
Mr. Malcolm Downey, Principal Health and Safety Inspector with the Health and Safety Executive (Northern Ireland) will give an outline of their new initiatives to improve health and safety in Northern Ireland.
Mr. Brian Daniels former Young Farmer of the Year will explain the important role farm health and safety plays in operating and expanding his Dairying enterprise.
