Teagasc Crops BETTER Farm Open Days

The Teagasc Crops BETTER farm programme assists Irish tillage farmers to avail of cutting edge farm technology and business methods, to improve profitability and to develop links between research, advice and tillage farms.  

All farmers will have an opportunity to visit these farms with Crops Better Farms Open Days taking place next week:

  • 19 June - John and Denis Crowley, Mallow, Co Cork
  • 21 June -  George and Ken Williamson, Duncormick, Co Wexford
  • 26 June -  Joe and Colm O Donoghue, Stamullen, Co Meath

The events run from 2pm to 6pm

Over the past three years, the Crop Better Farmers have achieved an excellent performance in terms of yields and financial return compared to the performance on other farms, as measured by the Teagasc National Farm Survey. The results are some of the best in the country. 

At the open days, the technical efficiency of the farms including crop performance and fuel usage of the machines involved will be highlighted. There will be featured stands on disease control in winter wheat and winter barley, oilseed rape management, nutrition of crops, winter wheat and spring barley variety trials. Tillage farmers will have an opportunity to meet the farmers, Advisers, Specialists and Researchers, on the array of topics which will be covered at the events.  

“All growers attending the events will have a chance to view the crops on these farms in the BETTER farm programme and assess their technical performance and get an insight on how to achieve top returns every year”, according to Michael Hennessy, Tillage Specialist, Teagasc.  

The events will give local growers a chance to see many of the key agronomic trials from Oak Park under the conditions in these areas. These plots have already been the focus of much debate and interest also amongst the visitors to the farms.  The wide soil and climatic variations amongst the three Crops BETTER farms, ensures that input strategies are robustly tested in the small plots, but the plots can also be debated amongst local growers.
