Teagasc Pig Farmers' Conference

The Teagasc National Pig Farmers’ Conference takes place at Horse & Jockey Hotel, Thurles on Tuesday next, 23 October and at the Cavan Crystal Hotel, Cavan on Wednesday, 24 October. The conference will cover a range of topics with a focus on both the feed ingredient and meat markets.

Speaking in advance of the conference, Ciaran Carroll, Head of the Teagasc Pig Development Department said: “The pig sector remains under pressure after another difficult year since last year’s conference. This has been mainly due to high feed prices. David Norris (Noggers Blog), will address this issue at the conference, looking at what’s driving the grain markets and what to look out for going forward? David Owens from Bord Bia will focus on the pig meat market and future prospects.”

With litter sizes on the increase, research from Teagasc Moorepark will address the nutritional requirements of lactating sows. An update on Teagasc research on carcass condemnations will be presented as well as some new work on Gilt Developer Diets. Continuing to look at cost reductions, there will be a focus on what top pig producers do, what is the optimum herd size, and how to save on energy costs. There will also be an update on the work of the Teagasc Pig Development Department at present.

Ciaran Carroll said: ”This is an opportunity for pig farmers to get the latest information, to meet fellow producers, and to get the latest advice and research updates from the Teagasc Pig Development Department. All those involved in the pig sector are welcome to the conference.”
