The winners of the fourth annual Teagasc “Vision of Research and Innovation” image competition were announced today, November 11, 2019, in Teagasc Head Office at Oak Park, Carlow, as part of Teagasc’s Science Week activities.

The competition is open to all Teagasc staff and students, inviting them to submit digital images created in the course of their work, with the aim of finding the most innovative and compelling images showing the range of research and innovation activities taking place across Teagasc. Selected images are used to promote Teagasc research and also feature in an annual calendar delivered to Teagasc centres and other stakeholders before Christmas each year.

This year’s competition was judged by a panel of judges comprising Jim Carroll, (RTÉ, editor of RTÉ Brainstorm); John Beeching (University of Bath, UK); and Catriona Boyle (Teagasc, editor of TResearch magazine).

From a total of 76 entries, 12 winners were selected. The winning images were: "Bacteria Revealing Research" by Elaine Lawton and Cathy Lordan; "Above the Clouds" by Valentyn Maidannyk; "Labour of Love" by Alison Sinnott; "Bluebells – Blue Sky" by Ian Short; “Potential De-nitrification" by Kerry Ryan; "Nutri2Cycle" by Patrick Forrestal; "Cows and Carbon" by Iris Nonhebel; "Hunting for Aphids" by Aisling Moffat; "Protein Ghosts" by Laura G. Gomez-Mascaraque and Samantha C. Pinho; "Flower in the Glume" by Dheeraj Rathore and "A15-MVX" by Helen Grogan.

The overall winner was Dheeraj Rathore’s image “Spike Architecture” taken during his research as part of a Horizon 2020-funded project BEST4SOIL - Boosting 4 BEST practices for SOIL health in Europe (grant no. 817696). The image shows the six-row architecture of a barley spike, a key component of grain yield.

Teagasc Director, Professor Gerry Boyle congratulated all of the entrants for the extremely high standard of images submitted and, in particular, thanked the judges for their care and attention to detail in selecting the winning images. Speaking about the competition, Professor Frank O’Mara, Teagasc’s Director of Research, said: “The competition, now in its fourth year, is a great opportunity to show the high calibre of research and innovation activities carried out by Teagasc staff, and to promote the scientific concepts underpinning our research to a wider audience”.

The next “Vision of Research and Innovation” image competition launches in May 2020 and will close in September 2020.

The Vision of Research exhibition at Teagasc Head Office is part of the ‘Festival of Farming and Food – SFI Science Week at Teagasc’.
