The worthy winner is Ms Jane Walsh from Rosses Point in County Sligo. As Jane describes, her winning image, entitled ‘The Beauty Around Us’, was captured while she was on a ‘simple yet beautiful walk on a gorgeous day in Hazelwood’ just outside Sligo town. Jane’s captivating photo was selected from almost 300 diverse forest landscape images submitted to the Teagasc forest photo competition. This competition, which provides further opportunities for budding photographers over the months of October and November, focuses on four separate forestry themes, each running over a fortnightly period. As winner of the first category, ‘Forest Landscapes’, Jane will receive vouchers valued at €250. Jane now goes forward to the grand final on December 8, where she will be in contention, along with three upcoming category winners, to collect further vouchers worth €750. This will bring the overall winner’s prize to a value of €1000.

In congratulating Jane on her success, Dr Nuala Ni Fhlatharta, Head of the Teagasc Forestry Development Department said: ‘Jane’s photo captures the essence of how forests can enhance our landscape, benefit water quality and provide us with a wonderful location to enjoy, while adhering to Covid 19 restrictions, in these challenging times. The judging panel is delighted with the response from enthusiastic entrants of all ages to the forest photo competition to date. The images submitted reflect beautiful forest landscapes we can experience from Donegal to Wexford and from Cavan to Kerry’. The winning photo, along with a selection of highly commended forest landscape photo entries can now be viewed on the forestry section of the Teagasc website at www.teagasc.ie/forestphotos.

Entries are now invited for the second category of the Teagasc forest photo competition - ‘Trees on the Farm’ - up to 5 PM on October 29, 2020. The competition is open to non-professional photographers and a maximum of one photo per participant is allowed for each category. Please also consult www.teagasc.ie/forestphotos for full details as well as terms and conditions. Teagasc sincerely thank all participants and wishes them the best of luck in the three remaining competition categories.
