Science Week 2021 -The Festival of Farming and Food
We invite you to join us for an unmissable series of virtual and in-person events for Science Week 2021 (November 7-14) as part of ‘The Festival of Farming and Food’, run by Teagasc.
Science Week 2021 -The Festival of Farming and Food
We will be looking for your ideas, for ‘Creating our Future’ as part of Ireland’s biggest brainstorm on Monday, 8 November. We’ll be asking you to share your thoughts and ideas on what you think Irish researchers should explore in agriculture and food to create a better future.
“We are very excited to launch our full range of events and activities for Science Week. There is something for everyone, from primary school level, to second level and up to an adult audience. Many of our events are online so are accessible nationwide. We encourage teachers to broadcast our events to their classes”, said Catriona Boyle, Science Communications and Outreach Officer at Teagasc.
At Teagasc, we are investigating more environmentally sustainable grassland swards by mixing grass with different clovers and herbs, which can bring multiple benefits to both farmers and the environment. Come and join us to discover the benefits of plant diversity for farming in our 60 Minute Science event!
Join us in the National Botanic Gardens to find out about the many interesting careers in horticulture.
We invite you to join us to find out about all things fruit and vegetable. Fruit and vegetables are good for us, but do you really know why? What do they do for us and what else can we find out about them? In Teagasc we’re working on finding out a lot more!
Have you ever wondered where your glass of milk, or the butter on your bread comes from? Join Teagasc and VistaMilk SFI Research Centre scientists as they answer kids’ questions all about cows, milk and grass during this fun interactive session.
Join our online events on Zoom and get a chance to put your questions to our scientists in our live Q&As.
Come and join us for a series of nature walks highlighting the importance of forestry in County Kilkenny.
“We also have other activities taking place during the week. Such as our ‘Meet a Scientist’ initiative, where our scientists will link up with school classes where they will explain what they work on and how they got to where they are in their careers. We have produced a series of videos called ‘A Day in the Life’ that can be viewed on the Teagasc YouTube channel. These short videos feature Teagasc scientists at work, talking about what a typical day is like, what sparked their interest in science and how their career path progressed”, explains Catriona Boyle.
There are also experimental packs in plant science and Coding with Cows and many other activities.
All of the Festival of Farming and Food events are free but must be pre-booked. Registrations must be made by an adult and all children must be accompanied by an adult at events.
This festival is sponsored by Science Foundation Ireland and Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority.
Full details of all events and activities can be found on the Teagasc website: https://www.teagasc.ie/scienceweek.
