The Energy and Farm Business Show is taking place today, Tuesday, 19 July in Gurteen Agricultural College, County Tipperary. It’s an opportunity to meet exhibitors who are leading the field and bringing a wide range of the latest product and service innovations in agriculture. The show is organised by Teagasc, Tipperary County Council, IFA, Tipperary Energy agency, Technological University of Shannon and Gurteen Agricultural College. The shows main sponsor is the Department of Agriculture Food and Marine.
Speaking ahead of the event, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD said; “Backed by support from me and the Government, farmers will become key players in the generation and supply of renewable electricity and fuel in rural areas. Farmers are pivotal to the renewable energy transition as we strive for net zero by 2050. The income generated by diversification is a vital component of many farming businesses – but it can involve unfamiliar planning, legal, staffing, plus health and safety issues. The show will provide an opportunity for farmers to see technologies and hear from expert panels about future opportunities for their farms. I am committed to driving support in this area for farmers as a key new and sustainable income stream.”
Senator Pippa Hackett, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine said; “The future of farming is in sustainable production methods as is the future of energy. This show offers farmers from across the country to see the very latest technology and practices to help each of us play our part in making Ireland a great place for sustainable agriculture. Both organics and forestry will play a role in this, and I am delighted to see both topics are being discussed. I would urge farmers across the country to consider some of the many options that are on display at the Energy and Farm Business Show 2022 and think about how they can not only improve their farm and environmental contribution – but also their lifestyle.”
Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD who will give an opening ministerial address and participate in the opening panel discussion chaired by Damien O’Reilly from RTE said: “Irish farmers have an opportunity to produce both world-class green clean food and green clean energy. As we move towards reducing our carbon emissions across the economy, we will do so in a way, which opens up new streams of income from sustainable energy systems, and new, sustainable farming approaches. A wide range of bioenergy options offer farmers choices, from displacing or offsetting fossil fuel emissions to creating greenhouse gas removals. There is the huge potential for farmers to use their grasslands in the roll-out of anaerobic digestion. Solar PV probably remains the most accessible and scalable of renewable energy technologies and we have new plans to provide substantially higher grants for the installation of solar panels on the roofs of farm buildings. This will not just reduce the costs of installation and farm electricity bills as the price of fossil fuels continue to soar, but can also open up a potential new income stream now that it is possible to sell excess electricity back into the national grid.”
Professor Frank O’Mara, Director of Teagasc, said; “The event will provide practical guidance on sustainable land use, on-farm diversification opportunities, renewable energy generation and emission control, cutting through the noise to get to the heart of what new changes mean for farmers, by covering specific pressing topics such as policy, carbon storage, carbon farming, net zero, renewable energy, and agri-tech.”

The event is free to attend and is open to all who are interested in reducing energy consumption and increasing the production of renewable energy on farms. This year there is a strong focus on diversification on the farm with a whole set of talks designated to the topic.
