This episode explores the future of sustainable food production. Seafood is a crucial component of global food systems, and this episode investigates innovative seafood farming techniques, such as 'bubble curtains' that protect salmon from harmful algal blooms and projects that mimic natural marine ecosystems to turn waste from one species into food for another. The episode also delves into research seeking to repurpose food waste into valuable plant-based proteins to tackle the European protein shortage.

Finally, in this episode, we meet Irish apple growers embracing modern techniques to expand local production, reduce reliance on imports and take a significant bite of the apple market!

Dr Alberto Ramos Luz, who is leading research projects to support the development of the apple growing industry in Ireland features in this episode. Alberto, a Research Officer in the Horticulture Development Department at Teagasc, based in Oak Park, explains: “In the episode, we showcase our research supporting the Irish apple industry by selecting varieties suited to Ireland, improving tree management for efficiency and quality, and aligning agronomic performance with consumer preferences. Our goal is to provide more profitable ways to grow apples in Ireland and increase the availability of high-quality Irish apples”.
