Type Event Proceeding

Proceedings from the Agri Environment Conference 2012 which took place on the 5 December in Farmleigh, Dublin.

'Sustainable Pathways to Food Harvest 2020'

Date: 06 December 2012

Location: Farmleigh, Dublin

Overview: This years AgriEnvironment Conference examined the concept of sustainable intensification and how the Irish agri-food sector can develop sustainable farming solutions that balance economic and profit imperatives with positive environmental outcomes.

Given the current and future challenges to our food supply and the environment, sustainable intensification of agricultural production is emerging as a priority for farmers, policymakers and international market.  How is Irish agriculture balancing the need to expand production to meet targets set out under Food Harvest 2020 while protecting the environment? What changes need to happen at farm level to substantiate our green image?  How can farmers, farm advisers, policy makers and industry respond to such immediate challenges?

An exciting line up of speakers from all parts of the industry presented at the Agri Environment Conference.  Michael Hamell from DG Environment presented the strategic priorities for the EU Commission and broadcaster/journalist Ella McSweeney moderated a panel discussion to examine the challenges and opportunities that environmental sustainability presents for the sector.
