Micheal O'Leary from PastureBase Ireland gave us an update on the grass grown and numbers of covers recorded in 2020. Dairy farmers that completed over 30 walks have grown 13.4T DM/Ha in 2020 and Beef and Sheep farmers with over 20 walks completed have grown 10T DM/Ha and 11.1T DM/Ha respectively.

The panel also looked at the Annual Tonnage Report, Farm Cover Report, Farm Summary Report and the Grass Report to analyse Jim White’s PastureBase data. The panel also discussed the fundamentals of Jim's grass based systtem where he particularly focuses on walking his farm 40+ times per year, building his farm cover to 1200kg DM/Ha AFC in Autumn, grazing grass into late November while not reducing his Spring target AFC of 1,100 Kg DM/Ha on the 1st February. Jim puts particular focus on the Spring/Autumn planners & Grass Budget to stay on track, along with good grazing infrastructure.

The main focus of the event was to help farmers to understand and capitalise on the numerous reports on PastureBase so the next few quiet weeks are an ideal time to sit down and review your PastureBase reports and identify a few areas for you to improve your grass-land management in 2021.
