This special issue consists of 12 papers, compiled in 2021 — the journal’s anniversary year. It highlights scientific advancements made over the last 60 years, as well as looking to the future to see how current knowledge, methods and tools can help us to meet the grand challenges facing the sector and wider society. It also identifies in knowledge that need to be filled by new research.
