In this month's edition:

  • Winter barley
April will be a critical month for winter barley crops to maximise yield. The five-year average of 8.5t/ha is below what many would expect, so timing of key agronomic inputs is crucial.
  • Winter wheat
Winter wheat will also need a lot of attention as we try to build a big and disease-free canopy in the crop to catch as much light as possible. Some 80% of the yield comes from the top half of the canopy, so having a good clean foundation is important.
  • Winter oats
Winter oats have progressed reasonably well given the weather, with most crops around GS 30 by April 1. Disease levels, especially mildew, are relatively low, but as usual include a fungicide that will control mildew.
  • Spring crops
Sowing of wheat, oats and beans is mostly done given the favourable weather in March, although some spring barley remains to be drilled in later areas. Increase barley seed rate as you drill into April; aim to sow approximately 350 seeds to establish 300 plants.
  • Health & Safety - Safe fertiliser spreading
Check your tractor and machine before spreading fertiliser. Ensure that PTO guards are in place and secure. Lifting equipment for large fertiliser bags must be in good condition. Use long-handled knives to open bags, stay clear, and always lower equipment when it is not in use. Drive carefully at all times, especially in the farmyard. If you must travel on slopes, carefully assess the risk of overturning. Stay vigilant.
