This publication summarises the 2011 results for the single suckling cattle enterprise and is based on suckler cow enterprises with more than 10 suckler cows. This enterprise is the predominant cattle system and is operated on 31,382 farms nationally.

This publication summarises the results for the dairy enterprises on farms where the main focus is oncreamery milk production. Farms producing a majority of liquid milk are excluded from the sample,as are herds of 10 cows or less.

Cereals Enterprise - National Farm Survey Results 2011

This publication summarises the results for the major cereal enterprises (Winter wheat and Spring barley) on these farms. In terms of representation, there were 156 farms with a Spring barley enterprise in the survey in 2011, representing approx. 144,ooo hectares. Farms with less than 10 hectares of Winter wheat or Spring barley are excluded from the following analysis.

Cattle Finishing Enterprise - National Farm Survey Results 2011

The performance of the cattle finishing enterprise in 2011 is summarised here. A cattle enterprise is defined as a finishing enterprise if over 70% of the animals are sold for slaughter, approximately 15,700 farms nationally operate this type of cattle enterprise. The data presented here are for enterprises with more than 10 livestock units (lu) in 2011.

Constructing Outdoor All Weather Arenas

When constructing an all-weather riding arena it is important to follow the correct procedures for design and construction to ensure the arena remains useable for many years. The aim is to provide a riding arena that can be used under all weather conditions. The surface should be firm, yet offer some cushioning effect to minimise jarring and at the same time allow some forward movement of the foot on landing to give controlled deceleration. Both these properties help to keep the horse sound.

Production of Ice Cream

Ice cream is a frozen dairy desert, manufactured by freezing and aerating a pasteurised mixture of ingredients including milk products, sugars, emulsifiers, stabilisers, flavouring compounds and water. Since the turn of the century and the development of the ice cream cone, the growth in consumption has been phenomenal with over 12bn. litres of ice cream consumed world-wide each year. Composition of ice cream varies from product to product with an average composition of 12% milk fat, 11% non fat milk solids, 15% sugar and 0.3% stabiliser/emulsifier.

Organic Cattle / Sheep Production

Organic produce is one of the few expanding markets in the food and farming sector. This expansion is consumer driven. The greatest demand is for fruit and vegetables but this follows through to a much wider range of products, i.e., dairy products, meat, processed foods etc. Market surveys in Europe and all over the world show a huge scope for expansion in organic produce.
