New stockproof hedgerows are valuable additions to farms, wildlife and the countryside.
Healthy dense growth at the base of the hedgerow keeps it stockproof. Routine hedge cutting is required to retain a dense base in a hedgerow and prevent woody species growing into mature trees.
Trees and shrubs have a natural lifespan. Given time, space and lack of management, they grow up, mature and die. With limited natural regeneration or seeding within hedgerows, over time they can die. The lifespan of hedgerows can be extended by rejuvenation.
Today's farm is a bi-monthly publication produced in a joint venture between Teagasc and the Agricultural Trust, publishers of the Irish Farmers Journal and The Irish Field.
Hedgerows have many values and functions. They can be multi-functional. A diversity of hedgerow types and management on a farm is ideal.
