In recent years, the area of winter wheat has ranged from 50,000 to 60,000 ha. with spring wheat occupying from 17,000 - 24,000 ha. The main reason for the dominance of the winter crop is the higher output and margins obtained in comparison to spring sown varieties.
The main concern of this code of practice is the avoidance of damage by pesticides to the health and safety of the sprayer operators and to the environment.
Beekeeping can be practised almost anywhere in Ireland, but naturally there are localities more favourable than others. Our climate imposes a severe but practical test of beekeeper's capabilities. However, that should not prevent any interested and committed person from embarking on a pursuit which is immensely rewarding in terms of personal fulfillment and achievement.
