In this edition of Today’s Farm, we have a number of articles which focus on Teagasc activities supporting young people who plan a career in farming. Our cover story focuses on a story from Seamus Kearney about a farm family succession in Waterford. We have an article by Patrick Gowing starting on page 9, which features a young new entrant to dairying in Westmeath. In addition, we have an article on page 26 by James O’Donoghue on distance-learning, which enables those in full-time employment to gain their Green Cert. Our article from the Teagasc College at the National Botanic Gardens by John Mulhern points out that students can earn a Green Cert there. It’s a great time to be entering farming and all Teagasc staff are working hard to assist those who make this excited career choice.

Future Weather Future Farming - Videos
Weather has always been a factor in farming. Expert analysis of climate change outlines that we can expect increased variability, and more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. This requires that our farming systems are resilient to weather shocks. Weather is particularly important to tillage farmers, but this year, grassland farmers were severely impacted by poor weather in the summer /autumn of 2012 and the spring of 2013. This was a costly experience for farmers, particularly so on heavy soil farms which are especially vulnerable to wet weather. Teagasc has monitored the situation on the ground over the year, and data from the Teagasc National Farm Survey will show the impact on farm profitability.

Well controlled grazing management during the springtime will set up your farm for excellent milk production from grazed grass for the remainder of the year. The Spring Grazing Rotation Planner will take the guesswork out of grazing management and ensure that your first rotation does not end before your target date.

Teagasc in association with the School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin produced this 226 page book. With around 10,000 species grasses are the fourth largest plant family, surpassed only by the daisy-dandelion family, the orchids and the mint family. This vast number is divided into 600 genera organised into 12 subfamilies, to one of which most of our Irish species belong. They are by far the most important plant family in agriculture. Grasses account for 70% of the crops we grow, and three grass species provide us with more than half of the calories we eat. They are the principal food of cattle, sheep, horses and other farm animals. This book is now back in stock. Call 0599170200 to order your copy

Awareness of crop margins is vitally important since under the decoupled regime the Single Farm Payment (SFP) will be paid irrespective of what crop is grown. Moreover, it makes no sense to produce the crop at a loss. The bottom line is that the land must be maintained in “good agricultural and environmental condition”.
Participative On-farm Research for the Border Midland West region
Evaluating alternate pasture based milk production systems for the Border Midland West region
This Open Day at Solohead coincides with a large reduction in milk price this spring. There is an urgent requirement for dairy farmers to reduce the cost of milk production. Research at the Solohead Research farm has shown that fertilizer costs can be substantially reduced by replacing chemical fertilizer with white clover and the efficient recycling of slurry. Well managed cloverbased swards can supply 140 kg/ha of N each year at little cost, which is a large proportion of the N requirement on an average Irish dairy farm. Another benefit is that white clover herbage is of high quality and maintains high quality pasture under low nitrogen input systems. Other topics covered at the Open Day will include grazing management, dairy cow health and fertility and use of high EBI genetics.
