DAIRY: Thermoduric Bacteria are heat resistant bacteria in milk that survive pasteurisation.
Sexed semen provides many potential advantages to dairy farmers. The most obvious and compelling reason to use sexed semen is because of the sex bias induced in the calf crop. Stephen Butler, Teagasc, Moorepark has some advice.
Milking is one of the essential tasks on a dairy farm. During these extraordinary times of COVID-19, it is essential to keep yourself and your milkers safe at milking time.
By Edward Webb, Soils & Environment Adviser, Teagasc Galway/Clare
DAIRY: Most Irish dairy farmers are concerned about the reputation of the dairy industry. Three quarters are willing to support the establishment of a sexed semen laboratory in Ireland to reduce the number of male dairy calves findings of a study conducted by the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway and Teagasc.
DAIRY: The California mastitis test is a simple procedure to help identify high SCC quarters within high cell count cows. It is impossible to identify sub clinical mastitis without this aid.
DAIRY: Advice on how to ensure that your breeding season in 2020 is a success. It is important to use heat detection methods, monitor the Body Condition Score (BCS) of your cows and check out any problem cows.
DAIRY: If you’re behind, use the grass on the first grazed paddocks to decide when to start the second round. On most farms, now is an ideal time to apply fertiliser to boost grass growth. Now is a great time to spread slurry, where possible, using the low emission slurry spreading equipment.

This workbook is designed to act as an aid in assessing existing dairy farm infrastructure and planning for improvements in the areas of grazing infrastructure, milking practices and energy use. It should act as a guide through a review process which can take the form of a walk(s) of the farm/farmyard and discussions regarding the above elements.

The Teagasc Profit Monitor (PM) is an online financial analysis tool available to all Teagasc clients. It provides a snapshot of a dairy farm’s financial (and physical) performance and allows you to compare your farm’s performance with available benchmarks, including your farm’s previous year’s performance, other farm’s performance or Teagasc targets. Completing a Profit Monitor analysis on a yearly basis helps you with how the farm business is performing and keeps you informed if changes made in the farm’s operation are having a positive effect on farm profitability. The purpose of this publication is to provide a range of benchmarks for both individual farmers and farmer groups.
The drought conditions that Ireland is currently experiencing has negatively impacted on silage stocks across the country. Farmers are being encouraged to to plan for next winter to ensure they have enough fodder.
The Interagency Fodder Committee conducted a Fodder Census at the end of June / early July. Over 1,000 farmers from across a range of enterprises were surveyed across the country. Results of this survey in late June / early July showed a deficit of 18% nationally. The variation across regions varied from a 12% deficit in Roscommon, Longford, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and up to a 30% deficit in parts of West Cork. The results have to be treated with some caution as conditions have deteriorated since the census date. If we assume that half of the second cut has been consumed, Teagasc estimate that the national fodder deficit is now 28%.

In this edition of Today’s Farm, we have a number of articles which focus on Teagasc activities supporting young people who plan a career in farming. Our cover story focuses on a story from Seamus Kearney about a farm family succession in Waterford. We have an article by Patrick Gowing starting on page 9, which features a young new entrant to dairying in Westmeath. In addition, we have an article on page 26 by James O’Donoghue on distance-learning, which enables those in full-time employment to gain their Green Cert. Our article from the Teagasc College at the National Botanic Gardens by John Mulhern points out that students can earn a Green Cert there. It’s a great time to be entering farming and all Teagasc staff are working hard to assist those who make this excited career choice.

Future Weather Future Farming - Videos
Weather has always been a factor in farming. Expert analysis of climate change outlines that we can expect increased variability, and more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. This requires that our farming systems are resilient to weather shocks. Weather is particularly important to tillage farmers, but this year, grassland farmers were severely impacted by poor weather in the summer /autumn of 2012 and the spring of 2013. This was a costly experience for farmers, particularly so on heavy soil farms which are especially vulnerable to wet weather. Teagasc has monitored the situation on the ground over the year, and data from the Teagasc National Farm Survey will show the impact on farm profitability.

This submission has two principal parts. The first part outlines Teagasc’s responses to some elements of the DAFM Consultative Paper’s questionnaire. The Teagasc position in relation to the definition of permanent grassland and areas of natural constraint, the operation of the Greening Scheme and the Young Farmers Scheme is presented. The second part of the submission describes the findings of an economic analysis of a number of scenarios relating to the Basic Payment Scheme, Voluntary Coupled Support Scheme and Redistributive Scheme. Five scenarios are analysed, each with the same basic convergence model (the so-called internal convergence model) but with differing levels of the Pillar I direct payments budget allocated to coupled support and redistributive payments.

Discussion groups are a key methodology used by Teagasc to transfer knowledge to dairy farmers. Due to the importance of discussion groups and the increased farmer involvement as a result of the Dairy Efficiency Programme, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Teagasc commissioned this independent evaluation to determine the effectiveness of dairy discussion groups and to identify ways in which these groups could be developed and improved. This evaluation is not an evaluation of the DEP, but it provides useful analysis and feedback on the DEP.

Earlier this year, Teagasc, ICBF, Irish Farmers Journal and ACCBank, came together to launch a new, oroject-based competition for dairy discussion groups. The objectives of this new competition were two-fold: To stimulate dairy discussion groups and allow for the development of stronger bonds between members and to encourage the development of profit or lifestyle based innovations for widespread farm adoption. From the initial applications, ten discussion groups were shortlisted. These groups have developed their project proposals through 2012 and will present their final reports at today’s event. This booklet presents a brief summary of each of these ten projects.

Farm Partnerships, where two or more partners operate their enterprises jointly, are becoming increasingly popular in Ireland with almost 600 formally registered Milk Production Partnerships in existence. Partnerships are associated with wide-ranging economic and social benefits and are identified by Teagasc and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) as critically important to the future development of agriculture. Drawing from research that examined Irish farmers’ experiences of Farm Partnerships, this document identifies some critical factors that warrant careful consideration in the partnership planning process. Benefits of Farm Partnerships are highlighted, as are particularly challenging and contentious factors. A flexible template for a participatory extension process, customised to facilitating the formation of Farm Partnerships in the Irish context, is set out.
