Teagasc/SRUC Conference
A number of Post-Doctoral Researchers and PhD students from Teagasc Mellows Campus, Athenry presented posters at the Teagasc/SRUC joint conference 'Rural Futures' in Edinburgh Scotland in March 2018. The posters covered a range of topics including; cattle exlcusion from watercourses, factors affecting farmers intentions to adopt practices, social sustainability indicators and causes and time of lamb mortality.

The 4 th NAP of the Nitrates Directive requires farms with a grassland stocking rate over 170 kg N/ha (hereafter referred to as derogation farms) to prevent cattle from accessing watercourses from January 2021. This is likely to have environmental and economic implications.

This study aims to develop an additional suite of social sustainability indicators, building upon the current set of indicators designed within the Teagasc National Farm Survey (NFS). The expansion of social sustainability indicators is imperative for the evaluation and observation of policies regarding rural sustainability and development, in addition to providing socio-economic statistics on current farm and community level conditions.

Causes and time of lamb mortality in grassbased systems of prime lamb production

Lamb mortality is a major economic constraint in sheep production. The objective of the current study was to determine a) the ultimate causes of lamb mortality and b) time of death in mid-season, grass-based systems of prime lamb production.
