FAIRshare

Farm Advisory digital Innovation tools Realised and Shared

FAIRshare Final Conference -October 2nd & 3rd Thessaloniki, Greece

Background

European agriculture is facing critical challenges over the coming decades, particularly the sustainability of food production. Electronic data generation, analytics and communication technologies have the potential to enable more accurate, faster and better decision-making on farms. It is acknowledged that a digital divide currently exists in the agricultural sector. This divide explains the gap between the adoption of digital technologies and access to digital infrastructure and services.

There are many different factors that can influence the digital divide such as the cost of adopting certain technologies, the widespread availability and understanding of technologies, aspects such as infrastructure and connectivity,  and indeed the motivation of farmers to adopt digital technologies and tools. There is a danger that digitisation and future innovations may be hampered unless the farm advisory community is mobilised to take ownership of digital tools and to advocate at the user interface.

Permanent Networking Facility

To bridge the digital divide FAIRshare aims to facilitate and enable the sharing of tools and knowledge and experience that exist with the farm advisory community.

A digital platform creating a portal/inventory for the acquisition, exchange and dissemination of Digital Advisory Tools and Services (DATS) has been created. Access this Permanent Networking Facility here

What is FAIRshare?

FAIRshare is a €7million EU funded H2020 project being led by Teagasc, bringing together 22 partners from 15 countries across Europe. It is a five-year project running from November 2018 to the end of 2023.

Aim of the Project

The main aim of FAIRshare is to improve agricultural advisors’ use of digital tools and services to enable better uptake of digital technologies by European farmers. Digital advisory tools and services include:

  • ICT tools
  • Monitoring and Analysis tools
  • Decision Support Systems
  • Regulation and Quality Control/Assurance tools

Project Objectives

The project has two main objectives:

  1. To develop an open inventory of the digital tools and services in use internationally, this will be available to all advisors.
  2. To create a ‘living lab’ which empowers advisors from across the EU to engage and interact with the online inventory.

The FAIRshare will fund 40 different advisory User Cases that will enable advisors to address the challenge of embedding digital tools in different advisory and farming contexts across the EU. Special focus will be on co-designing powerful communication and engagement approaches for advisors to advocate and inspire their peers and farmer clients. This will help drive a stronger network for the wider and better use of digital tools.

The project will therefore engage, enable and empower the independent farm advisory community, through sharing of tools, expertise and experiences.

Get involved

Advisors can get involved in the project by documenting a digital advisory tool or service to the projects online inventory. A group of advisors can apply to be a User Case; 20 external user cases will be funded by €90,000 or €30,000.

The tendering process will begin in March 2021 so it is advised to follow the project through its various social media platforms as well as the project website itself.
