Background

Many private forests produce high quality, large volume logs along with many other products. It is therefore important to keep an eye on what this timber is used for beyond the sawmill and what the market sees as important.

Timber has many facets; as a construction material, a fuel, fencing material, packaging and a long-term carbon store. Like with many other farm products, forest owners need to understand the unique qualities and potential of timber. This in turn can inform forest management decisions to supply what the market and society requires.

Programme

Teagasc in association with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is organising an event focusing on Supplying Sustainable Timber Products. This timber marketing day will give forest owners the opportunity to meet with timber buyers, harvesting contractors and foresters.

Talking Timber will run from 9.30am to 2:30pm and will include:

  • Networking opportunities with timber buyers
  • Log and timber products display (presented by Forest Industries Ireland, FII)
  • Short presentations on selling timber and what the market requires
  • Questions and Answer session

Further information

8 September 2015: Two hundred forest owners attended Teagasc's Talking Timber event in Claremorris, Mayo. Forest owners were told that the quality of the timber has a very important bearing on the market price offered.
