Background

Teagasc, in conjunction with the Forestry Division of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) is organising an important demonstration on managing forestry storm damage, focusing on timber harvest and planning for forest restoration.

This forestry event will provide guidance to forest owners whose plantations have suffered windblow damage. Windblow following both storms Darragh and Eowyn is estimated to have damaged approximately 12,000ha of private forests. Teagasc invites forest owners whose plantations have been impacted by storm damage to their forest, to attend this important event.

For forest owners who have experienced storm damage, the most important advice is not to rush into decisions, but to make a step-by-step plan to minimise risk and maximise the salvage value of the plantation. Most forests, despite being blown, can have considerable timber value.

Because of the unpredictable nature of windblow, a number of important issues arise for forest owners which will be discussed at both events, including:

  • health and safety issues,
  • felling licences and road grants in the context of storm damage,
  • marketing and sale of windblown timber,
  • timber product assortments,
  • keeping track of timber from its harvest to market,
  • and planning for forest restoration.

Attendees will meet at

St Kevin's GAA Club, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, F45 K500

and will be bussed to a local forest site to see timber harvesting of wind-blown trees. There will also be discussions on how the forest site should be presented after felling to facilitate future replanting.
