Teagasc Seminar on Greenhouse Gas Emissions – a Role for Agriculture
This seminar was held on Wednesday, 26 March in Wexford. The EU has proposed new greenhouse gas emission targets for 2020 which involve a 20% reduction in emissions from the non-emissions traded sector (ETS) by 2020. Considering rising global demand and the future relaxation and removal of EU milk quotas, which will tend to increase agricultural emissions, currently at a quarter of national emissions, this target presents a major challenge to the country.
The seminar heard from Teagasc experts in the various sectors, together with a presentation from Dr Hendrick, COFORD, while also looking at the strategies implemented by New Zealand in implementing measures to stabilise greenhouse gas emissions whilst maintaining production.
The following are the seminar presentations:
- Introduction - Dr Frank O'Mara
- GHG abatement policies the NZ perspective
- Prospects for expansion of the dairy sector to 2020
- Tillage Production to 2020
- Emission projections and future policy options
- Forestry the major carbon sink
- Methane abatement options for the dairy industry
- Methane abatement options for beef production
- Mitigation strategies related to agricultural soils
- Displacing fossil fuel emissions with biuels and biomass
