Let's Talk Dairy - Sexed Semen and Synchronisation Protocols

23 April 2021
Type Event Proceeding

On this episode of Let's Talk Dairy, which took place on 15th April, Stuart Childs, Teagasc Dairy Specialist gives advice on cows that are suitable for sexed semen and appropriate synchronisation protocols for both cows and heifers.

Stuart gives an overview of the factors that you need to take into consideration when deciding to use sexed semen as well as synchronisation protocols and fixed AI usage.

Heifers are the most suitable for sexed semen from the point of view that their fertility is going to be very good and they don't have the challenges of milk production that cows are going to have.Stuart goes through a few key points that need to be taken into consideration.

When using sexed semen on cows, you need to breed off the best, so younger cows in the herd and clean cows - cows that don't have any health issues need to be used. Ideally cows who are cycling regularly, good body condition score, 50 days or more at milk and between first and fourth calving.
