Webinar series to focus on profitable, functional cows and genetics for the future

The Teagasc Future Beef team will host a series of webinars over the month of March, which will centre on a farmers’ guide to suckler breeding.

Commencing at 8pm on March 20, the first webinar will focus on farmers’ stories, specifically their journey to profitability. This webinar will be chaired by Martina Harrington, Future Beef Programme Manager, and will feature Future Beef Programme participants Shane Keaveney, Ruairi Cummins and Ken Gill. The panellists will be interviewed by Gabriel Trayers, Teagasc Future Beef Programme Advisor. Topics to be discussed include: achieving key breeding targets; practical management tips; compact calving; calf per cow per year targets; and their replacement policies.

The second webinar in the series, taking place at 8pm on March 25, focuses on getting your cow back in calf, with farmers sharing a guide to a successful breeding season.

Again chaired by Martina Harrington, it will feature John Dunne and Aonghusa Fahy, Future Beef farmers, and David Kenny, Head of the Teagasc Animal Bioscience Research Centre. The panellists will be interviewed by Aisling Molloy, Teagasc Future Beef Programme Advisor.

Topics on night two of the webinar series include: managing your cow; AI / heat detection technologies; and is your bull fit for purpose?

The third and final instalment will shed light on the genetics for the future and is scheduled to take place on March 27 at 8pm. Panellists included Wesley Browne and Trevor Boland, participants in the Future Beef Programme, who will be interviewed by Chris Daly, ICBF. Topics to be discussed at this webinar are: breeding a more efficient cow; meeting market specification; and carbon footprint considerations.
