Blight, seed supply and future market trends on the agenda at the National Potato Conference

The National Potato Conference – an event organised by Teagasc, Bord Bia and the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) – will take place on Thursday, November 21.

Centring on the theme of ‘Potatoes – Looking to the Future’, the event taking place CityNorth Hotel, Gormanston, Co. Meath, K32 W562 and commencing at 9.30am will examine consumer trends as well as challenges such as seed potato supply and blight. Delegates in attendance will also have the opportunity to network and interact with various industry representatives, as a trade show will occur throughout the afternoon.

Speaking in advance of the conference, Potato Specialist at Teagasc, Shay Phelan said: “The National Potato Conference offers an excellent opportunity to identify the latest trends in consumer preferences, allowing growers to respond and strengthen the position of their business going forward.

“Although traditionally filled by imports, demand for salad and processing varieties for chip has increased. These two categories now account for almost 20% of the area grown, with many Irish growers diversifying to meet demand from the marketplace. An overview of consumer preferences will be provided at the conference to enable growers to track and react to future market trends.”

Shay continued: “Commercial potato growers are now acutely aware of the potential challenges the new EU43 strain of blight poses. Detailed agronomic advice, both in terms of the consequences of this blight strain and the chemistries available to limit its impact, will be discussed at the National Potato Conference.”

Other topics of interest to be covered at the National Potato Conference include: the trade negotiations impacting seed potato supply; best practice on home saving seed; and what can breeding contribute in blight control.
