Ballyhaise Research Farm Update
Donal Patton manager of the Ballyhaise research farm reports that 2022 was a very good grass year in most parts of Cavan including Ballyhaise. The farm has grown 12.7 t DM / ha to November 15th with 30% of area reseeded as part of our current trial.

Why are 25% of dairy replacement heifers calving over 26 months?
Martina Gormley, Teagasc Dairy Specialist, tells us only 75% of heifers calve down at 22 to 26 months of age. 25% or around 80,000 heifers calve over 26 months in age.

57% of Farmers found to engage in Unsafe Farming Practices
Fifty seven percent of farmers engage in unsafe farming practices according to research completed by Teagasc researchers. When asked to respond to a number of common farm work scenarios, most farmers stated that they were more likely to engage in unsafe practices.

A day in the life of a Walsh Scholar with Elena Hayes
Elena Hayes is a Teagasc Walsh Scholar based in Moorepark in the Food Chemistry & Technology Department, she is currently in the second year of her PhD. Her research focuses on using spectroscopy and chemometrics to predict milk processing traits such as heat stability and rennet coagulation time.

Lameness in housed cows
George Ramsbottom, Teagasc Dairy Specialist explains why cows often become lame around housing time. Their hooves soften in the wet underfoot autumn conditions. When they’re housed, they are vulnerable to two particular types of lameness. The two conditions are sole ulcers and mortellaro.
